Student Age 25 Ruling in Texas
In Texas there was a ruling passed saying that a dependent could be covered up to age 25 under their parents plan. This means that the dependent does not have to prove student status to remain on a health insurance plan in Texas as a dependent. There are exceptions, such as if the plan is not fully insured and may be self-funded by the company. In this case this regulation or ruling may not be written in the contract.
If a dependent on a group plan has lost coverage due to turning age 25 they may be able to continue their insurance benefits on Texas State Continuation for an additional 6 months. At the end of the Texas State Continuation, they will need to seek out other health insurance coverage such as an individual health insurance policy.
